How to Read Supplement Labels Like a Pro

Walk into any supplement store and you will face a wall of bottles with impressive-sounding claims. But how do you separate science from marketing? Understanding how to read supplement labels is one of the most valuable health skills you can develop.

The Supplement Facts Panel

The Supplement Facts panel is your most important tool. It must list every ingredient with its amount per serving and the percentage of Daily Value. Be wary of “proprietary blends” — these hide individual ingredient amounts behind a combined total, making it impossible to know if you are getting effective doses.

Third-Party Testing

Since supplements are not FDA-approved before sale, third-party testing is the gold standard for quality verification. Look for certifications from NSF International, USP, or independent lab reports (Certificates of Analysis). These verify that what is on the label is actually in the bottle — and that contaminants are absent.

Red Flags to Watch For

Avoid products with excessive filler ingredients, artificial colors, or that make disease treatment claims. Supplements cannot legally claim to cure, treat, or prevent disease — any product that does is violating FDA regulations and should not be trusted.
